Big Family -- Small Space

The boys were coming to San Diego to spend their first summer vacation with us (since moving to Tucson). We wanted the boys to have their own room so our place would feel like home, too. After shopping for bunk beds, and not finding anything that worked quite right in that room, we decided to temporarily turn the office into a construction zone and build bunk beds from scratch!
The whole project took about a month of weekends and most weeknights. It took MANY trips to Home Depot for all the construction supplies, quite a few trips to AutoZone for just the right car-themed stickers, and lots and lots of sanding! We added the desk as an afterthought and it turned out really well. Amazingly, the “construction plans” were mostly in Cale’s head!
A driving force behind the project was the desire to build a “permanent” slot-car track that could be stored under the bottom bed. Complete with chrome decorator handles, the track slides easily out from under the bed and is ready to race! As a finishing touch to the beds, we added four-inch breather elements from the local hot rod shop as finials. (Melanie called them whirly-gigs.)
We are very proud of the results and the boys absolutely LOVE the beds!
